The band's name was inspired by the character from a short story "J. H. Obereits Besuch bei den Zeitegeln" ("J. H. Obereit’s Visit to the Time-Leeches") by Gustav Meyrink (1868-1932), who is also one of the primary influences on the band's lyrical concepts. In the band's official bio, the name is described as being derived from the root "ober" (German for "upper", also comparable with "über" - "over") and meaning the "spiritual mentor" or "the one who overcomes or liberates", also referring to the Higher Self.
On the covers of some releases Russian spelling Оберайт has been used.
