Founded on July 7, 1989, by Txus di Fellatio and Pedro.
Originally the band was named Transilvania 666 in honor to the instrumental piece "Transylvania" by Iron Maiden. Then in 1989 they changed the name to Mägo de Oz (Spanish for "Wizard of Oz" and stylized with an umlaut) taking inspiration from the book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" written by the author L. Frank Baum.
