Originally started by Nordavinden in the early 1990s, the band went through a series of name changes in its formative years. Settling with "Black Chapel" in 1997, Nordavinden picked up a drummer, Rati, and they wrote the tracks that what would later become the Bloodaxe demo "In Battle." Shortly thereafter "Black Chapel" was disbanded. In 1999, Nordavinden and Rati decided to reform the band as "Bloodaxe," and the duo would go on to record and release the bands first two albums.
Between 2002 and 2006, Rati chose to leave the band. Not long after, Nordavinden decided to disband Bloodaxe due to his own distaste for the metal scene. After moving to Alberta, Canada, Nordavinden reformed the band with a new drummer, Scott Tanner of Thorazine.
The band is named after King Erik Bloodaxe, a son of King Harold Fairhair of Norway. In the British Isles, he was ruler of the Viking kingdoms of Northumbria and Jorvik (York) until his death in 954.
