Adveniat Hiems - Loki

More complexity, please... - 55%

Interesting... generally I have to complain about bands stretching the riffs and motives to unbearable limits, but in case of these Italian, the matters actually lie different::

From their MySpace site:
The band sound is simple and cold, linear.
The band aims to have a direct and strong impact on the listener, not impress him with complexity but charming the audience with atmosphere and evocative sounds.

And there we have the problem... neat ideas yes, but there are no melodies with a lasting impact. So, while the band is actually able to create a decent atmosphere as well as a solid production, the listener might be surprised to see the compositions end so sudden. The rejection of some additional twists and turns is absurd, but for some unknown reason Adveniat Hiems (Latin for Let the winter come!) longed for this simplicity. Moreover, with length between four to five minutes, the tracks are actually in the realm of what other bands choose for their music. So, the anticipation would have direction the listener somewhere different.

Atmosphere is the key word here because the compositions never really move away from the calm and gentle way in which the riffs and ideas proceed. Generally, midtempo and slower make up the whole scenery and a dark and haunting atmosphere is created by the croaking like vocals in the background and the guitars in the foreground. The bass and the keyboards do the rest to complete a quite solid performance and even though the focus of the production is too far on the left speaker, the compositions are quite listenable. Nothing outstanding, but good for a spin or two. Dark and haunting but also a bit unconvincing.
